Tips on Moving to Los Angeles, California – Fake Tan Tips

Moving to Los Angeles

Every year, people from all over the world get that twinkle in their eye and decide to pack up their lives and move out to sunny Los Angles, California. Here are some tips to making the transition to LaLa Land.

1. Moving Expenses

Moving is expensive, really, really expensive. There are plenty of ways to decrease the cost of your move, the best being – simplify. You own a lot of things that you don’t really need. Seize some time to go through everything and throw things out. Really, it’s a cleansing experience, and will immediately make your life feel less complicated. The less you have to transport, the less you’ll spend. Really now, you don’t need those old magazines that you swore you’d get to, and that guitar you never play? Sell it online and obtain some extra moving money.

2. Job Search

Today job searching in Los Angeles is a lot easier than it has been in the past, thanks to one factor – the internet. Online job sites design it possible to apply for jobs in LA before you even start packing. This is also a great way to examine what the job market is like before you obtain the move. Los Angeles is a big city, and there’s a lot of competition for jobs, so you might want to update that resume with some new skills and clever wording.

3. Driving

Los Angeles is not a pedestrian city. Everything is spread out, requiring you to use a car or bus as your main form of transportation. With gas prices at an all time high, this takes some budgeting. Also, be advised that when you disappear to Los Angeles, you have 30 days to register your car at the California DMV or they will comely you. Automobiles in Los Angeles are all required to pass what is called a Smog Check, where your cars emissions are tested to ensure that it won’t add any more smog to LA (trust me it doesn’t need it). Have a hybrid or electric car? All energy efficient vehicles are allowed to drive in the commuter lanes in LA, even if there is only one person in the car. There’s also a great tax demolish for fuel efficient cars.

4. Where to hang out?

Los Angeles has something for everyone. People from outside LA may tell you that everyone in Los Angeles is made up of fake body parts with fake personalities, but honestly, everyone can find their niche. Hollywood is great if you’re out to spot some celebrities. Be prepared to spend some money on the latest fashions before heading out there. Really high end jeans seem to be a popular choice in Hollywood, and hair product and a tan don’t hurt either. Feeling au naturale? Head on out to Venice, where the people are down to earth, made in the shade, relaxed and always ready for a beach bar, big wave, or volleyball. Just want to enjoy the beauty of Southern California? Head on out to the Santa Monica pier or Malibu, for great ocean views. Miss the mountains? Head on up to one of the taverns up at Mt. Baldy, where you’d swear you were in Portland Maine or Oregon.

Los Angeles is a great place to live, and everyone can make their mark. The best part about Los Angeles is only a tiny percentage of the people you’ll meet are actualy from Los Angeles, so everyone’s shapely “new in town” and ready to make new friends. Good luck with your move!

5 Self Tanning Tips – Best Self Tanning Lotion

There is plenty of research that shows that tanning can cause skin cancer, yet many people still pursue the dream of a rich, golden tan. Luckily, for those looking to achieve the bronzed glow, there are many products on the market that can help to do the sun kissed look.

Applying lotions and sprays can be some what difficult and intimidating but with a runt practice and by following the 5 self tanning tips highlighted here, you may well be on your way to the deep, dark tan you have always dreamed of with out the harmful effects of the sun. The self tan tips may help to prolong your self tan and also give the self tan a better glow.

A self tanner will typically last about a week depending on the type of self tanner being used and also the success of the prep time before the self tanner is applied. Self tanner sits on the top of the skin but skin is continually shedding so there is only a distinct amount of time the self tanner will end attached to the skin before it comes off.

Self Tanning Tip: Exfoliate

One of the most important tips for a successful self tanning experience is taking time in the prep period which involves exfoliating. Since dead skin cells shed off, you want to make sure you retract as many humdrum skin cells as possible before you apply the self tanner. Most drug stores and grocery stores sell some type of exfoliating wash or lotion, take a look at the labels and the product should state something about being an exfoliating product.

Self Tanning Tip: Dress Properly

A dark swim suit is the best item of clothing to wear while applying a self tanner, the item of clothing should be tight yet stretchable so that it does not get in the arrangement as you are applying the self tanner but comfortable enough that you can still disappear around. If you feel comfortable, you could go in your birthday suit when applying the self tanner.

Self Tanning Tip: Start with Lotion

I personally like spray on tanning products better than self tanning lotions but I would recommend when first starting out with self tanning products to begin with a self tanning lotion. Self tanning lotions are a bit easier to control and navigate, once you bag experience applying a self tanning product, then I would recommend trying a spray on tanner to see which method of application you prefer.

Self Tanning Tip: Wash the Palms

One of the downfalls of applying a self tanning product is the fact that the hands can actually turn orange because so worthy self tanner soaks into the palms during the application process. There are a couple tips that can be offered to help prevent orange colored palms: the first self tanning tip is to wash the hands with soap and water or some type of baby wipes every couple minutes during the application process. The other self tanning tip is to wear gloves such as medical personnel wear during the application process. If you do settle to wear gloves, make sure to not forget to self tan the hands, in which case you will need to wash your palms at the end of the application process.

Self Tanning Tip: Tricky Areas of the Body

Some of the most difficult parts of the body to fetch a nice streak free glow are the feet, toes, ankles and the hands, fingers, wrists. Exfoliating should be done especially well in these areas of the body, a little less self tanner seems to work better on the tricky spots as compared to too much self tanner. I have also found that small circle motions really help to rub the self tanner in well in these tricky parts of the body.

Following these 5 self tanning tips should really help with making the self tanning experience more successful and may even help to extend to golden glow a little bit longer.

Dusky tanning lotions and sprays are relatively easy to use and apply but there are tips and techniques that can make the final results look a bit more consistent. Here are a few suggestions for getting the most out of sunless tanning products as a beginner.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Pick a Product You Are Most Comfortable With

What type of products do you typically use the most consistently in terms of body care? Do you usually apply body lotion more often than body mists? Do you lift a spray to a cream? The answers to these two questions will go far towards helping you pick out the best product to use for sunless tanning.

Sunless tanning lotions can be easily applied and can readily take the place of your regular body lotion. If you exercise lotion on your body daily after getting out of the shower, then you will be able to develop a good layer of color with a lotion a lot easier than with a spray.

However, if you like to consume body mists products to add scent to the body, you can pick up a murky tanning spray with added fragrance to give yourself the same results while also getting a tan.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Match Your Tone

Even if you want a really dark tan, you do not want to pick a sunless tanning lotion that is for a skin tone darker than your occupy. Start with a product for lighter skin and then work your plan up to the darker tones you want. There are products for all scenarios.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Use Separate Products

There are sunless tanning lotions and sprays custom made for both the body and face. Use different formulas to maximize your results. A sunless tanning lotion made honest for the face will yield better results and be better for your skin than a body lotion used on the face.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Have a Super Base

Exfoliate before applying your sunless tanning lotion or spray. This will help ensure an even coverage. If you apply sunless tanning then exfoliate, depending on the dryness of your skin you could make your results vary greatly from area to area.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Blend, Blend, Blend

Be certain and rub your dim tanning lotion in consistently and blend it outwards toward the hairline and beyond the jawline of the face and also be determined to cover the hard to reach places of your body like the mid-back.

Sunless Tanning Application Tip: Wash Hands and Be Consistent

Always wash your hands after application to ensure that your hands do not receive a double or triple dose of tanning.

Beyond that be consistent in your usage of sunless tanning products, and you will experience great results without the damage that comes from sunbathing.

Tanning Beds Are Unhealthy for Pregnant Women – Tanning Beds Effects

Dermatologist would agree, tanning beds, increase risk of premature aging and malignant melanoma or skin cancer. Obstetricians and gynecologists are concerned, pregnant women, exposed to tanning beds or excessive heat, expose fetus to health risk. During, first trimester or first three months of pregnancy, raising the body’s temperature (basal temperature), overheating or hyperthemia, in hot tub, saunas or tanning beds, increase risk of spinal malformation in the fetus. Also, Ultraviolet rays will diminish folic acid level. Reducing amount folic acid level causes neural tube defects in the fetus, such as spinal bifida. Also, attributed to sustainable elevated body temperature above 102 degrees Farhenheit. Pregnant women are more vulnerable to sunburns or yellowish brown pigment skin spots (“chloasma”). Also, exposure to heat is susceptible to sunstroke. According, published article in 1999 by Jablonski in Medical Hypothesis, evaluated “intense or prolonged periconceptual exposure of women to UV light for recreational or therapeutic reasons should be avoided.” Furthermore, increase exposure to heat indoor or outdoor tanning, reduce amount of breast milk, because loss of fluids through perspiration.

When tanning beds are not properly disinfected, germs will manifest themselves. These germs cause photoallergic skin reaction, upon contact. Cracks in bed pillows and scratches in the bed’s acrylic, attracts disease organisms, sometimes impossible to disinfect. Always, use protective eye – wear, while tanning. This prevents damage to the cornea and retina of the eyes.

Despite advisory concerns, pregnant women should use a tanning bed for short sessions. Drink plenty of fluids, preventing dehydration. Make sure there is adequate ventilation. After first trimester, pregnant women exposure to tanning beds, recommended maximum time ten – fifteen minute sessions, lying on side or standing up, preventing restricted blood flow.

Pregnant women should avoid applying Self Tanning lotions or creams. These products may pass through the skin, placenta, and harmfully affecting the baby. Also, chemicals in tanning lotion might penetrate the skin, bloodstream, and detrimentally effecting baby’s circulation. Active ingredient in self-tanning products is dihydorxyacetone (DHA), which penetrates the skin. No conclusive evidence DHA is harmful. Preferably, use lotions containing antioxidants and low synthetic chemicals.

The Sun Zone Tanning Salon in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania – Tanning Salons Tips

With summer coming, you may be thinking of getting a tan. There are several tanning salons to choose from in the Bridgeville area, but the best by far is The Sun Zone.

The Sun Zone tanning salon is located at 3249 Washington Pike, in Portman’s Country Commons, along with Portman’s, Beez, DiBartola Dental and Bambino’s Child Care Center. It’s located right next to South Fayette Shop n Save, about 2 miles from the I-79 Bridgeville exit. You’ll find the actual salon underneath the Portman’s building.

The Sun Zone is a miniature salon, but it still manages to fit 4 tanning beds inside. Each of the tanning beds has a maximum tanning time of 15 minutes. The bulbs in the beds are strong, giving you a nice tan in a shorter amount of time. The newer and stronger the bulbs, the more even your tan will be. You also want to look for a tanning bed that has the bulbs cessation together. At The Sun Zone, each of the beds are equipped with bulbs that are fit close together, allowing you to achieve a nice, even tan all over, without those obvious tan lines.

If you are beginner tanner, meaning you have never tanned before, or you haven’t tanned in a long time, I would suggest starting out with a short amount of time in your tanning bed. The girls at the salon will recommend that you open off slow, and then work your way up. This allows your skin to build the tan, without burning it. If you have pale skin and jump into a tanning bed and lay in it for 15 minutes, you are going to be sorry. Trust me, you will burn. Tanning bed burns are usually much worse than regular sun burns, and engage longer to heal. Start off tanning for about 7 minutes, then the next day, 8, and so on until you reach 15 minutes. The Sun Zone, like the majority of other tanning salons, will only allow you to tan once per day. You wouldn’t want to tan more than that anyway.

The Sun Zone has a nice selection of tanning lotions to choose from. They carry brand name lotions, like California Tan, Emerald Bay, Australian Gold and more. Sometimes, they will even have a sale bin, where you can find some great deals on tanning lotions and accessories. I bought a large bottle of Australian Gold Cheeky Brown, which usually costs about $13, for only $7! Before you assume any lotions online, check out what The Sun Zone has to offer right there in the salon.

The only thing I don’t like about the salon are the hours, especially on Fridays and on the weekends. The hours vary, but during the week you can expect them to be open until about 7 pm. On Fridays, they are open in the morning, but close around 1 pm. Weekends are the same – start in the mornings until early afternoon. Sometimes, this can be inconvenient for me, but I try to work my schedule around the salon’s hours. I only live and work about 2 miles away from the salon, so I can easily drive down on my lunch break or after work to tan. The salon does require an appointment for tanning, although I have walked in a few times when they weren’t very busy.

I do have a few tips for tanners at The Sun Zone, and other tanning salons. You will need to wear eye protection, to protect your eyes against the UV lights. Don’t worry; they will not give you “raccoon eyes”. Also, resolve how you are going to tan. Will you tan nude, or in your bathing suit? Remember, if you tan in your bathing suit, you will get tan lines. Tanning nude may be a good choice for you, because you will get a complete body tan with no lines. The Sun Zone, like other salons, has private locked rooms with each tanning bed, so nobody can regain in and see you. When it’s time to start tanning, you usually have about 2-3 minutes to pick up undressed and apply any tanning lotions. Then, your bed will turn on. Make sure you wear your goggles! Lay down on your back, or stomach, and pull the top lid over you. You can listen to your iPod or CD player while you tan, if desired. The 15 minutes does pass pretty quick, and the bed will shut off automatically. When you’re done, get dressed and well-kept off your bed with the provided towel and cleanser. A lot of people think that they don’t have to clean their bed, but it’s a nice thing to do because you will probably leave sweat on the bed, and the salon workers probably don’t get much joy from cleaning up your sweat!

Another tip is to buy a monthly package if you can. Tanning packages vary, from 1 month up to 3 months. Don’t buy individual tans, since they are usually more expensive all together than a package. For a 1 month unlimited tanning package, it’s about $45. There is no limit to how many days per month you can tan, but you can only tan once per day. At The Sun Zone, you’ll have to initial a piece of paper, proving that you tanned for that day. I would recommend tanning at least 3-4 times per week for a great looking tan, although you may find that more or less works better for you. I’ve tanned every day of the week before, and achieved a fast tan, although it probably wasn’t the best for my skin.

Remember, tanning beds are not a safe alternative to the sun. They are just as dangerous. Before you decide to tan at a salon, recognize over your options. There are many self-tanners out there, and daily glow moisturizers out there that can give you similar results, although they may not look as real as a tanning bed tan. The Sun Zone is a great set to go if you are looking into tanning at a salon. Not only is the tanning salon staff friendly, the salon is very clean and welcoming. You can contact The Sun Zone at (412) 257-8266.

A Guide to the Basics of Self-Tanning – Tanning Self Tanner

With frightening reports of skin cancer and sun damage all over the news, it’s easy to understand why more people are turning to indoor tanning. Gone are the days when people would bake their skin in the sun for hours and end up looking like the back of an alligator, or worse, ending up with irreversible skin damage or cancer. Today we know it’s not necessary to sacrifice our health for simply getting a nice tan.

Tanned skin was not always in vogue. The ancient Greeks and Romans used to apply paints and chalks to their faces in order to pick up the exact opposite effect, snow white skin. The whiter the better, and considering they were generally darker skinned to begin with, this was no easy feat. People began to die from lead and other poisonings simply from trying to whiten their skin. Fortunately word caught on that this was no longer a excellent opinion.

Posthaste forward to Elizabethan England and the story is the same, except at least now women are reverting to using parasols to avoiding the sun as opposed to painting themselves with harmful substances. Ah, progress. Then, in 1923 French designer Coco Chanel returned from a European vacation with a deep, shaded tan that she claimed was unintentional. Whatever the case, news of the gape swept through the United States and people slowly began their quest for tanned, healthy looking skin. If only they knew about UV rays back in the ’20s.

So before you’re faced with the many methods and variations of self tanners, you should know a exiguous about your skin. Human skin is made up of two main layers, which in turn are made up of thinner layers. The epidermis is the outer portion and this is the piece that tans. Melanin is the natural substance in our skin that causes us to turn us that brownish color we call a tan. Melanin is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight or UV rays. The darkening is actually a way for the skin to protect itself from more exposure. There are a few different types of UV rays, some harmful, some not. Some are absorbed in the atmosphere before we even have to exertion about them; it’s the ones that reach our skin that we do have to worry about.

Our skin is a living thing and is constantly shedding and growing new cells. In fact, it completely regenerates itself every month or so which is where exfoliating becomes important. Before using a self tanner it’s always advised to thoroughly exfoliate the skin and always moisturize. Moisturizer is distinguished to maintaining a healthy tan as well as preparing the skin for the tan in the first region. Well-hydrated skin is able to believe color better and will help the tan remain visible longer. It’s recommended to exfoliate the day prior to using a self tanner and also to shave as well. The less wear and tear on your skin and its new tan the longer it will last. Gently exfoliating every few days after tanning will help it fade evenly. Follow up with the moisturizer that’s best for your skin and its particular needs. And it’s also not a good idea to go scuba diving or soak in the hot tub after a self tanning session of any sort. Chlorine and salt water, actually water of any kind, can fade your tan before its time.

The advent and progress of tanning beds have made it possible for people to strive for a “safe tan”, but some are finding that UV rays are still UV rays. It’s true a tanning bed offers a controlled environment in which one decides on the amount of exposure time and can adjust accordingly. Sunbathing outdoors where factors such as cloud coverage, time of day and pollution are not possible to control which makes the risk of sunburn quite possible. Besides the distinct cancer risks, injure from UV rays also cause our skin to wrinkle and age considerably faster. If you aren’t willing to take better care of your skin for health reasons, then consider the vanity factor. In any case, a tanning facility will have trained employees who can answer your skin care questions and steer you in the legal direction if tanning beds are the route you resolve.

Most salons also offer a newer method of achieving a tan, and often a flawless one. Spray tanning can be the reply for you if you’re not comfortable with applying tanners yourself and want to have a UV free tan. Spray tanning eliminates streaking and uneven discolorations, on properly prepared skin of course, and is hastily and easy. Usually in less than 10 seconds you can be on your plan out of the booth and admiring yourself while you dry. Most people spray tan in the nude since the booth is completely private, others wear undies or bathing suits, but that’s up to you. Unbiased remember that the bronzers used may stain your clothing, so wear something dark, skimpy and made of a material such as cotton. A consultant will guide you on how to protect your mouth and nasal passages from inhaling the mist, while not poisonous; it’s still a good concept not to breathe it in. They’ll also provide a shower cap of some sort for your hair and eye protection. Color can be seen instantly, although some will fade and wash off as the lawful shade should appear completely within 24 hours, as is with most self tanning products. The number of sessions should be based on the darkness desired. Keeping in mind that less is sometimes more in more instances than not. A gradual, natural tan is more believable than showing up for work 10 shades darker today than you were yesterday. Or worse, risking looking silly in your wedding dress the next day.

And lastly, you should know that there are literally hundreds of self tanning products that you can give a whirl right there at home. Sprays, lotions, creams, gels, wipes and towelettes are the most popular ways to apply self tanner. Tanning accelerators and pills however, have not been scientifically proven to be safe, or to even work effectively. The American Association of Dermatology advises against tanning pills as they have been linked to cases of discover and liver distress to name a few.

DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is a harmless, non-hazardous substance derived from sugar cane that interacts with your skin and its natural proteins and amino acids to create the brownish color. You will notice that this ingredient is present in all effective indoor tanners, along with vitamins, moisturizers and aloe vera. Scary sounding name, harmless component that’s essential for darkening the skin without the sun. DHA has been regularly used in self tanning products and cosmetic bronzers since the 1970s and has long been deemed safe for utilize.

Whatever method you choose of tanning, make the best choice for you and your needs, your budget and its needs and always remember to take care of your skin if you want it to look its best.

Tips and Tricks to Remove Self Tanner – Best Self Tanner

Sunless tanning is an adventure in beauty treatments because you never know what you are going to end up looking like. Self tanning can have very different results on every single person’s skin, and it doesn’t just rely on the tanner, but your skin plays an important role in how well the tanner takes. Removing self tanner when things have gone wrong can be done, but there are a couple products and tips that make the job easier.

Self tanner is absorbed only by the first layer of your skin, which is why it is very temporary and fades after just a couple of days. Because of the way your skin absorbs tanner it is not always possible to remove all of the color, especially immediately after you first apply it, but exfoliating is the quickest and easiest way to get the job done.

If you have applied too much self tanner and need to reduce the appearance of your tan, or your tanner applied with too much orange color to it, here are a couple products and tips to help you engage your self tanner at home.

Exfoliation is the best arrangement to both apply and steal self tanner from your skin. If you have already exfoliated prior to self tanning, this process might not work as well, because you have removed the dead skin cells that also make up the first layer of your skin. If not, use a body exfoliator like Dove Exfoliating Body Wash ($5, drugstores everywhere) that can be applied to the entire body, or at least where the self tanner has been applied.

Take a long hot shower, or bath, that will allow your skin to soften up and exfoliate better once you start scrubbing. A loofah or natural sponge is one of the best items you can keep in your bathtub to aid you scrub off old skin and sustain soft skin at the surface everyday. Use the loofah to scrub down your skin, not too hard, and remove as much of the self tanner as possible.

Sugar scrubs are another easy device to exfoliate your skin and acquire self tanner that is not the color you want. A colossal body scrub that I have used when my self tanner went on too streaky or uneven is Jo Malone Vitamin E Body Treatment Scrub ($75, jomalone.com). After soaking in the bathtub for fifteen to twenty minutes use a washcloth to scrub the body treatment gently over the area that you want to bewitch the self tanner from. This treatment should only be done once every three to four days, so if enough of the tanner does not disappear you will need to wait before trying again.

Finally, one of the cheapest and product free ways to remove self tanning color from your skin is with the use of lemons or lemon juice. This method can be done one of two ways, but both require plenty of lemons or lemon juice. Use a washcloth dipped in lemon juice that you rub into your skin to remove the color. Otherwise, jump in the shower with several lemon wedges that you can apply to your skin and rub in to help remove the color as fast as possible.

The city is perfect for vacationing families, couples, and singles since there truly is something for everyone.

Those wishing to spend time on the beach with a loved one or children can visit Carolina Beach where the sand is clean, litter free, and the city provides lifeguards up and down the beach. Even over the Fourth of July, the crowds at the beach are not overwhelming. Parking costs only five dollars for an entire day. There is a wooden walkway from the parking lot to the beach itself. While it is perfect for families, Carolina Beach itself does not offer wheelchair accessibility to the beach location. It does offer a level of safety not available on all beaches. Coolers, beach umbrellas, sandcastle building supplies, surfboards, and short boards can be brought to the beach although alcohol is not acceptable and for good reason. It is a abominable mixture between the heat and humidity of North Carolina’s beaches in the summer, it is dangerous when swimming or sunning, and it is not appropriate for a family oriented beach such as Carolina Beach. Parts of Kure and Wrightsville Beaches are available for dune buggies, horseback riding in the surf, and offer other areas more private for couples wishing to distance themselves from the crowds of children.

Carolina Beach is a postcard perfect scene with families playing together in the surf and sand. Children and couples scramble the waterline in search of the perfect seashells. Children gather to get sandcastles or run in and out of the surf at the water’s edge. Older children and adults occupy boogie boards and surfboards further out into the water to hurry the waves as lifeguards retract special care to watch over everyone to ensure a noble day at the beach. Occasionally, one will find a photographer taking various pictures or a journalist sitting beneath an umbrella with pen and pad or notebook computer taking in the sights and sounds of the area. Sunbathers covered in suntan oil lie on beach towels catching the powerful rays that preserve many North Carolina residents tan throughout the year with hot summers and unexcited winters.

This part of Carolina Beach comes complete with shower area to rinse off sand and salt water in addition to restrooms with bathrooms and sinks. The amenities make life easier for parents trying to change children out of wet sand-filled bathing suits and into dry clothes before piling back into the vehicle at the end of the day. The wait time to score access to the restroom areas and showers are usually short. Residents and visitors alike are polite and feel a lot like family. Crime is not terribly high in Wilmington yet it is always a good idea to remain mindful of the surroundings and others.

After a day spent at the beach, it is nice to have a nice meal at one of the many varieties of ethnic restaurants in the area. While Wilmington is a port city, restaurants aid distinguished more than seafood, unlike many other beachfront areas. Some of the foods available are Chinese, Mexican, Greek, Indian, Thai, French, and many bistros are available options. An example of the variety within each restaurant is The China Buffet. The buffet bar offers several rows of bars filled with any Chinese dish one could wish for including a full sushi bar and dessert bar. Special rates are available for children. Beverages include various sodas, iced tea, Chinese beer, Sake, and a wide variety of wines. Many restaurants benefit breakfast, lunch, and dinner although most of the hotels in the area offer complimentary continental breakfasts.

Wilmington is home to a famous New York Bistro, various cafes with sandwiches or pudgy meals. The downtown district offers one of the best Italian restaurants. This writer’s favorite restaurant in Wilmington has to be The Caffe Phoenix. It is located at 9 South Front Street in the downtown district and provides 5-star dining including a children’s menu. The menu offers a variety of options although my recommendation is the skewered grilled shrimp, basil rice, and grilled zucchini or the Penne Pasta. Most children opt for the single pizza though Caffe Phoenix offers more of a gourmet pizza. It is not a Pizza Inn or Pizza Hut. This is a nice size pizza perfect for an adult or a child’s meal. Beverage choices range from sodas, iced tea, various mixed drinks, and vintage and various fine wines. There is no need to be fearful about asking the host for recommendations of wines to compliment your meal; hosts are extremely knowledgeable about these things. Not everyone had a wine aficionado as a parent as this writer did; however, I did skip the glass of wine for one of the specialty drinks, the Moni Lassi, during our visit.

The restaurants often have fine art on display by local artists. Often, the pieces are available for purchase such as the one I am contemplating, which was hanging in the Caffe Phoenix. It is a beautiful painting of one of the rivers flowing into the ocean near the downtown area. The businesses are extremely considerate and supportive of local talent from the area. In fact, the reason I hoped to visit the café was to find a building faded within the movie Empire Records and was the basis of a nightclub written into my first recent. It sits next door to the Caffe Phoenix. In fact, the café was in the movie Empire Records as well. Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger had lunch at one of the outside tables in the film. Film stars often visit the restaurant when working on films on the set in Wilmington; it is easy to understand why after visiting the restaurant. The food is wonderful, the staff members are courteous, and the ambiance of the restaurant is extraordinary.

Shoppers will fall in love with Wilmington after visiting the markets and antique shops. It is impossible to choose between pieces when visiting the shops in the city. The choices are so broad with such variety. It is a bit pricey but there are deals available and it is possible to do a bit of dickering on prices at many shops. The art galleries are excellent places to shop for that perfect painting or sculpture that will look divine in one’s home. It is nice to bring home a bit of Wilmington’s culture to enjoy when the time comes to leave.

Beachcombers do not despair. Wilmington, Carolina Beach, and Wrightsville Beaches all have the chain store Wings available to locate beach items such as bathing suits, beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, knick-knacks, keepsakes, and collectables. The stores carry items from the ocean such as petite glass bottles of sand with miniature shells, separate and necklaces with shark teeth, shell necklaces, shell bracelets, and shell anklets. The stores even carry a supply of healthy hermit crabs, miniature lizards, and African Dwarf Frogs. We could not leave Wings without my 10-year-old coming home with one of the small aquariums with two Dwarf frogs complete with a stalk of growing lucky bamboo and a snail. My friend’s 6-year-old picked out a few hermit crabs to bring home as friends for the two they already have at home. The dwarf frogs are now a member of our family zoo, which includes a guide dog, domestic shorthair cat, our somewhat manic but aging Quaker Parrot, and the little one’s two dwarf hamsters. The shrimp frogs live in water and have pellet food available at Wings with a card containing the name, phone number, and web address of where to order more food once returning home. The bamboo will grow although this is not a bad thing since all one has to do is snap the tops off as it grows and root it in a cup of water until it is large enough to region in a nice Asian vase for display in the home. I received a vase of lucky bamboo as a gift so I already have sprouts awaiting enough growth to situation in a vase with small rocks and water.

Fishermen can visit various areas around Carolina Beach, Kure, and Wrightsville Beach for surf fishing, charter boat fishing, and pier fishing. Even with the pain from the hurricanes that came through a few years ago, the area built back in record time considering the extent of the damage.

There are many attractions to visit while in Wilmington. The Hollywood Studio offers a tour of famous locations in the location although be sure to call ahead to reserve a spot on the tour. Also, wear comfortable shoes and cool clothing since the tour requires a fair amount of walking. In addition, there is a tour of haunted areas around Wilmington too. Being a port city, Wilmington seen its share of pirates, wartime, and accidents along the coast and within the studios. The most famous accident occurred on the plot while making the original film The Crow starring Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee. This is but one of the stories told while touring the petrified areas of Wilmington. Again, be determined to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as this tour is a walking tour too.

Children and adults alike will enjoy touring the USS North Carolina Battleship. The battleship does have a gift shop to purchase post cards, books about the battleship, and other items relating to the tour.

Those in love with theater will find a few theater houses where plays, musicals, and films are available for viewing at various times throughout the year. It is important to remember Wilmington is not very far from Roanoke, which features the re-enactment of The Lost Colony, which is the longest running musical in America and tells the factual story of the first colonists from England to the Americas. It is the tale of the mysterious disappearance of an entire colony including the first English child born in the Americas long before Jamestown and Plymouth. The fate of the colonists are as much a mystery today as it was more than 200 years ago when Governor White returned after returning to England for supplies only to become waylaid due to the war with Spain. The only clue as to the existence of the colonists was an etching scratching out the words, “CROATOAN.”

Back in Wilmington, the Hollywood Studio is responsible for filming hundreds of movies and television series. Some series, such as Dawson’s Creek continue filming in the station today along with One Tree Hill, and others. Movies filmed in Wilmington include A Walk to Remember, The Butcher’s Wife, Dim Dog, The Jackal, Empire Records, Forgiven, Betsy’s Wedding, To Gillian on her 37th Birthday, and Firestarter. Firestarter was the movie that began the career for Drew Barrymoore. George Burns filmed Radioland Murders in Wilmington, which was his final movie. Many actors loved the station so much they purchased homes and take up residence in Wilmington. Actors such as Kim Basinger, James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek), Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill), and Dennis Hopper all have residences in the area. The website information proclaims Andy Griffith as living in Wilmington but his home is actually in Manteo, which is not far from Wilmington. He filmed the Mayberry Reunion in Wilmington as well as Matlock. Andy Griffith got his start on stage performing in The Lost Colony at the theater in Roanoke before leaving to make his long-standing career in film and television and returned to his home as he reached retirement while remaining within the industry.

Wilmington is a contradiction in terms. It contains the art, dining, and nightlife of places such as tremendous cities like Unusual York. It has the Hollywood Studio like Tinsel Town in California. It offers beautiful beaches much like those found in exotic places far away. Although, even with the attractions, movies, television series, famous actors in and out of town, the nightlife, and art this lovely beach town manages to hold onto small-town values with residents who never met a stranger and are always welcoming and courteous to whoever comes to visit. This city is so fat of life and business though the people never forget how to slow down and devour life. The diversity and culture enhances Wilmington instead of destroying it. This is the reason Wilmington, North Carolina should receive the vote for America’s top beach.
